SDMC inspection finds sanitary workers missing from duty

Following the inspection, the commissioner of SDMC Manish Gupta immediately ordered suspension of 11 supervising officers and imposed penalty against 11 others.
Interestingly, the sanitary inspector Anil Sethi of Malviya Nagar ward, represented Delhi’s BJP chief Satish Upadhyay was also suspended for not doing his duty. It is important to mention that Upadhyay has been spearheading the Clean India campaign in Delhi ever since it was introduced by the prime minister.
The officers of SDMC, however did not disclose the number of sanitation workers, who were found physically absent from their duty. Heavy penalty has been imposed on the assistant sanitary inspector Mahendra Singh and sanitary guide Hari Lal, who is responsible for ensuring presence of workers in the field.
The surprise raid was conducted in six municipal wards of SDMC, out of which three are represented by BJP councillors and one each by BSP, Congress and an independent. A maximum of five officers — three assistant sanitary inspectors and two sanitary guides were suspended from Raja Garden ward represented by BJP councillor Suman Tyagi.
In Daryaganj ward of BJP councillor Simi Jain, one assistant sanitary inspector was suspended while
penalty was imposed on four officers.
‘The physical verification of the presence of those employees were scrutinised during the surprise inspection through biometric attendance. It was conducted in six wards of SDMC,’ informed a senior civic officer.
Meanwhile, Subhash Arya, chairman of standing committee in SDMC said such surprise raids will continue. ‘Anyone found absent from work or not doing the job will face the music,’ said Arya. The SDMC has also announced a special sanitation drive in the view of ongoing festive season.
