SDMC gives thumbs up for construction waste recycling plant

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) is planning to set up a recycling plant to convert debris of demolished buildings into useful construction material. The plant would be set up on public private partnership model (PPP) and the civic body would provide eight acres of land to the private concessionaire at one rupee for a period of 10 years.

‘The disposal of construction and demolition (C&D) waste has become a huge problem in the city due to limited space. The waste is usually dumped on the river bank or around water bodies which has endangered their existence,’ said Subhash Arya chairman of standing commite in SDMC.

The civic body will soon invite tenders from competent authorities to execute the project.

As per the conditions laid down by the SDMC, the private concessionaire will be responsible for collection, transportation, processing and disposal of C&D waste in the areas under its jurisdiction.

Manish Gupta, commissioner of SDMC said the corporation spends Rs 12.6 crore annually on collection and transportation of construction waste. The land will be provided in Bakkarwala area in West Delhi. ‘Four acres of land will be used for setting up the plant and the remaining half will be used to store residual material’, the civic commissioner informed.

The chairman of standing committee said that they have constituted a sub-committee to supervise the purchase of machinery to be used for collection and disposal of construction waste. ‘The committee will look after the entire process of purchasing necessary machineries in coordination with DEMS department’, Arya said.

He also asked the officials of DEMS department to procure 800 dustbins to be put up in all the wards of SDMC.
