South MCD has claimed to chalk out a comprehensive plan to plant one lakh trees including shrubs and saplings during this monsoon in its four zones. Launching the drive, the Corporation planted 110 trees on Friday.
“The objective of planting big trees is to ensure higher survival rate and accelerate the pace of greening in the parks. Further, the plants would also provide abode to the birds apart from mitigating pollution in the locality,” said Shailender Singh, chairman of the standing committee of South MCD.
A large number of people including children and students participated in planting trees and shrubs.
Singh emphasised on involvement of the councillors, residents and school children in each ward.
Giving the details of the zone wise plantation break up, Singh informed that 30,000 trees will be planted in West Zone, the same number in Najafgarh Zone and 20,000 each in Central and South Zones.
“This will include at least 1,000 Rudrakash in each Zone,” he added. The Corporation is emphasising on plantation of the saplings of Indian varieties like Mal Tash, Ashok, Molsori, Neem, Kachnar, Champa and African Mahogany. Apart from the trees, 1,500 flowering shrubs will also be planted.
