Scores turn up in the hospital to see, financially help abandoned girls

Recuperating at the Baba Saheb Ambedkar hospital in Rohini, several people on Friday lined up outside the ward to get a glimpse of the eight-year-old girl and her three-year-old sister rescued from a dingy hell in Samaypur Badli a week ago.

On one hand, a mother abandoned her daughters with their alcoholic father and on the other hand, scores of people across the national Capital turned up at the government hospital in Rohini to shower affection to the minor girls. Out of the few people who came to the hospital, there was a mother of a seven-year-old boy. Sunita, a resident of Welcome area in North-east Delhi came to see the minor girls in the noon after their plight was highlighted by a section of the media on Friday morning.

Sources said that Sunita tried to meet the two minor girls but was turned away by the hospital authorities for security and hygiene reasons. Sunita waited inside the Ambedkar hospital premises for a long time but had to leave.

Sources said that Sunita had come to the hospital to financially assist for the treatment of the two girls.

Apart from Sunita, a tailor, Ajit Yadav, came to the hospital. Sources said that many people like Sunita and Yadav went up to the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Samaypur Badli police station to know about the children and where they were admitted.

Rescued by the Delhi Police on August 19 from a one-room shack in Outer Delhi’s Samaypur Badli area, the two minor girls were locked in the dingy room, surrounded by maggots and their own excreta.

An investigating officer, privy to the case, shared: “The room was stinking. There were rats everywhere. While we saw the girls lying in a broken cot, their bodies were covered by maggots. It is the one of the most horrific scenes I have witnessed in my policing career till now.”

To ensure safety of the minor children, Delhi Police have deployed two constables from the Samaypur Badli who remain on duty round-the-clock.

Sources said that on August 15, the two minor girls’ alcoholic father, Bunty, allegedly left them in a fit of rage after he was not able to feed them food. However, what further shocked the police was the attitude of the girl’s mother, Rosy, who left the house with her two-year-old son.

In a bid to trace any relative of the minor girls, police found that they have an 80-year-old grandmother. Living in an oldage home, she told police that she will not be able to take charge of her grand daughters as she herself does not keep well and lives in an old-age home.
