Schools ordered to sensitise students about drug abuse

Concern has arisen over the impact of drug abuse on young children and these programmes will be framed to spread awareness on the issue.

‘Juvenile Justice Committee and the Delhi High Court are holding periodic meetings with various stakeholders in the states to sensitise and create awareness for prevention of drug/substance abuse among children. To channelise their energies we have asked principals from all schools to provide a helpline number on bulletin boards at prominent spots in their respective schools,’ said Padmini Singla, Directorate of Education.

‘To divert the child’s attention toward positive activities, we have asked school heads to have painting competitions, slogan competitions, etc, under ‘yuva’ club activities at the school-level in this regard. Dramatic activities like role play, nukkar natak, etc, based on spreading awareness regarding the ill effects of substance abuse will be presented in their morning assembly’, added Singla.

Another senior Delhi government official, on the basis of anonymity, said, ‘The problem in India is there are no sensitisation programmes about drug abuse in schools or for children out of school. For drug abuse amongst school children, reliable data is not available’.
