SC to hear PIL challenging CAG appointment

The Supreme Court on Thursday, while agreeing to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on appointment of new Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), posted to take it up after vacation in July. A bench of justices B S Chauhan and Dipak Misra said there is no urgency in taking up the matter during vacation.

Senior IAS officer Shashi Kant Sharma was sworn in on Thursday by President Pranab Mukherjee as CAG following retirement of  Vinod Rai retired on Wednesday.

Advocate M L Sharma challenged the appointment of new CAG, saying that SK Sharma had in the last 10 years held several sensitive positions in the defence ministry that dealt with significant procurements and appointing him as CAG would mean a conflict of interest.

Earlier, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) had found itself in a tight spot when the appointment of Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) P J Thomas was challenged the the apex court, which had set aside his appointment as illegal in 2011.

The court had also laid down stringent guidelines for future appointment of Central Vigilance Commissioner.
