SC stays execution of 2 death row convicts

The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the execution of two death row convicts, which was scheduled for Thursday.

The President early this month had rejected the mercy pleas of Shivu Munishetti and Jadeswamy Rangashetti.

After the rejection of their mercy pleas, they had approached the apex court to get relief in a 13-year-old rape-cum-murder case. The duo had been sentenced to death for brutally raping and murdering a teenaged girl in 2001.

Senior Advocate K V Vishwanathan, appearing for the convicts, sought stay on the execution of their sentence citing delay by the government in deciding their mercy pleas.
