The Supreme Court on Monday sought a response from the Centre and the state governments on a PIL, seeking uploading of FIR on police website within 24 hours.
A Bench, comprising Justices Dipak Misra and Shiva Kirti Singh, issued notice to the Centre and all states on the plea of an Uttarakhand-based organisation.
The PIL filed by Youth Bar Association of India seeks direction to upload every FIR (First Information Report) lodged in all police stations across the country on the official website of police stations within 24 hours from the time of registration of the case.
“FIR is a public document, however, to obtain a copy of an FIR from the police is not easy task for the general public. Therefore, if the FIR is put on websites it would be in the larger public interest and will also avoid difficulties being faced by the public...,” the Bench said.
