The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the central government on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking enforcement of emission standards in tune with EURO V for diesel and petrol vehicles in the country and seeking its direction to introduce updated National Ambient Air Quality Standards in tune with Europe and USA and in consonance with EURO V.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir sought the response from the central government on the petition of an economist Arvind Gupta, who pleaded that steps needed to be taken to prescribe stringent emission standards for vehicles so as to control air pollution and protect the health of citizens.
Among other prayers, the petition has also sought direction from the court to the government to discontinue extending subsidized diesel, saying it is recognised the world over as the dirtiest of all fuels.
It says that the diesel subsidy policy of the government is one way promoting the sale of Diesel passenger car and aggravating pollution of Indian cities and causing irremediable harm to the society.
