Saudi Arabia relents on Fasih Mohammed, deports him to India

Investigators are hoping to find a fresh breakthrough in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack and other terror cases, as they plan to confront Fasih Mohammed, who was arrested on Monday by the Delhi Police, with their earlier catch Abu Jundal, the alleged 26/11 handler. Jundal is in judicial custody in Delhi till 3 November.

Sources in the Delhi Police say that the 28-year-old Mohammed, who was allegedly involved in Delhi's Jama Masjid blast and the Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium blast, is an Indian Mujahideen operative and that he may have come in contact with Jundal, who used to motivate the group's cadre. 'We may interrogate them jointly and are preparing a joint questionnaire for it. It may lead to new revelations,' a Delhi Police source said.

Mohammed was deported from Saudi Arabia on Monday and was taken into custody by the Delhi Police, after which the home secretary R K Singh said, 'It is an important catch. He was deported from Saudi Arabia. Our officers were in constant touch with Saudi officials. We've had information and evidence about him from a long time. We arrested few people in September and October and he was one of the facilitators of those people.'

Mohammed, who hails from Bihar and is engineer by profession, was sent in a routine civilian flight and was placed under arrest upon his arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. India had sought his deportation from Saudi Arabia. It had also got an Interpol Red Corner notice issued against him by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Mohammed was detained in Saudi Arabia in the first week of May this year. Singh added that he was the 'key facilitator' for 13 Indian Mujahideen terrorists who were arrested from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and a few other places late last year. Jundal, considered a key planner of the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai, was also deported from Saudi Arabia earlier this year.

After Jundal's deportation, the Saudi authorities had objected to the media coverage about it. A delegation from the Gulf country had also met the National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon and is believed to have objected to various 'leaks' to journalists.

The Saudi government handed over Mohammed to India only after getting several documents from India, including the statements of the alleged Indian Mujahideen members who had been arrested by the Delhi Police over the last year, sources said.
