'Satyamev Jayate' inspires Gujjars to ban dowry

Inspired by the dowry death episode of Satyamev Jayate, the Gujjar community has taken an oath ‘neither to take dowry, nor to give it’. Apparently, Gujjar Jaagriti Mission conducted a panchayat in this regard in Vijay Nagar area of Ghaziabad on Sunday.

Yatender Nager, president of the community, said, ‘For the last few years, woman, increasingly, are facing dowry deaths. Even the parents are wasting crores of rupees on a single day. We have decided to stop the dowry exchange. Everyone attached to us will promote this so that we have a control on the cases where women lose their lives just because they cannot fulfil their in-laws’ dowry demands.’

According to Nager, first the community would focus on the dowry deaths in NCR, later they would extend this to Delhi as well. ‘The basic reason of these innocent deaths is greed. We arrange marriages lavishly feeding the greed of the groom’s family. After the marriage, they start harassing the girl for more money,’ added Nager.

In the dowry death episode of Satyamev Jayate, true stories were shown where the girls are being tortured for dowry. According to the episode, the major reason for parents’ wanting boy child is because of the the intense pressure for dowry during the daughter’s marriage.
