‘It’s sad that the guest teachers are paid only Rs7,000 per month which is not sufficient to lead a respectable life in the city,’ Upadhyay said demanding an increase in the payment of guest teachers. He further added that the previous Congress government did not appoint teachers in past 15 years the due to which 18,000 posts of teachers are lying vacant under Delhi government and education has become a business in which contract teachers are being forced to work.
The meeting comes a day after Jung met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh for about 20 minutes and reportedly discussed various issues including the political situation in the national capital.
Upadhyay, however, clarified that the issue of government formation ‘did not figure at all’ during his 50-minute meeting with the lieutenant governor (LG). He said he took up with Jung the problems of guest schoolteachers and the issue of release of water to Delhi from Haryana.
Upadhyay said that he had also urged the LG to ensure a corruption-free administration in Delhi.
‘We told the Lt Governor that a guest teacher is being paid only about Rs 7,000 per month whereas an ordinary employee gets minimum wages much higher than this.
‘In the last 15 years, the Congress Government disregarded the interests of the teachers due to which 18,000 posts of teachers are lying vacant... and education has become a business in which contract teachers are being forced to work. As a result the standard of education in government schools with all the amenities are deteriorating,’ he said.
