Senior BJP leader Satish Upadhayay has emerged the front runner for the post of mayor in south Delhi. According to sources, the party does not want to risk changing the standing committee chairman and leader of house.
‘Satish Upadhayay would be mayor candidate of BJP as there is consensus on his name for the post in the party,’ said a senior party official. Upadhayay is presently chairman of education committee in South DMC and enjoys confidence of Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel. He has the benefit of being a student leader in Delhi university and working with several senior party leaders during his tenure in ABVP, the student wing of the party. He represents the Malviya Nagar ward.
The other BJP councillors lobbying for the post of mayor from BJP are Savita Chaudhary, Anil Sharma, Radhey Shyam Sharma and Subhash Arya. The chances of three time councillor Savita Chaudhary are bleak as she belongs to Jat community and BJP has already given the post of mayor in North DMC to a Jat leader, Azad Singh. Subhash Arya is likely to be retained as leader of the house.
There are chances that party retains Rajesh Gehlot as chairman of standing committee. But, Ashish Sood, General Secretary with Delhi BJP is also lobbying for the post. Gehlot claims to have a strong hold on independents, which will play a crucial role in the election, as Congress has also decided to fray its candidates for these posts.
The election for the post of mayor will be held on 16 April and the date of filing nominations would be filed on 10 April. The next week is crucial for South DMC as the parties will have to declare the name of their candidates for mayor, deputy mayor and chairman of standing committee.
