Newly-appointed minister of state for HRD Shashi Tharoor made it a point on Tuesday to tell the world that he was a gallant man and for him his wife is priceless. Slamming Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi for making distasteful remarks on his wife Sunanda Pushkar Tharoor in Himachal Pradesh on Monday, Tharoor on Tuesday tweeted that Modi needs to love someone to understand how priceless the wife could be.
Reacting to Modi’s statement that Suanada was ‘worth Rs 50 crore’, Tharoor said his wife was worth a lot more than the Gujarat chief minister’s imaginary figure. He tweeted: ‘My wife is worth a lot more than your imaginary 50 crores. She is priceless. But you need2be able2love some1 2understand that.’
A day earlier in Shimla, Modi had unleashed a personal attack at Tharoor, just a day after he assumed charge, by saying his wife was once his ‘50-crore-rupee girlfriend’.
Modi had said: ‘There was a Congress leader who was a minister. He was accused of amassing wealth from cricket. He had said in Parliament that he is not connected to the 50 crores in the lady’s name.’ The BJP stalwart referred to Tharoor in the context of the IPL cricket controversy involving Pushkar in 2010, which led to Tharoor’s resignation as minister of state for external affairs minister.
‘...And then girlfriend becomes wife, we learn some time later... the issues are still not settled and he (Tharoor) is now made a minister,’ Modi had said. ‘Wah kya girlfriend hai. Apne kabhi dekha hai 50 crore ka girlfriend? (What a girlfriend? Have you ever seen a 50-crore girlfriend).’
Meanwhile, controversy continued to tail Sunanda, who slapped an unidentified man at Thiruvananthapuram airport. She along with Tharoor had arrived at the airport on Monday and were welcomed by an excited crowd. Malayalam news channels flashed images of a visibly upset Sunanda slapping the man in the crowd who had touched her inappropriately. The Tharoors had arrived at the Thiruvananthapuram airport to celebrate his entry as a minister in the UPA-II government. Tharoor represents Thiruvananthapuram in the Lok Sabha.
