After protesting for four consecutive days, Sarojini Nagar market traders would finally open their shops. They had a meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday to discuss their issues.
Traders were protesting against New Delhi Municipal Council’s (NDMC) decision of allotting 112 street vendors space in the market.
The traders had turned up to meet the Chief Minister to appraise her about the condition in the market. NDMC chairperson Archana Arora, NDMC secretary DS Pandit and other senior officers were also present during the meet.
Sources said that after a brief exchange of views, the traders decided to open their shops. It was also decided that the issues raised by the traders would be looked into.
There are already 120 street vendors at Sarojini Nagar market.
Earlier, traders threatened that they would keep the market shut till the time they get a written assurance from NDMC.
Sources said that, traders are also planning to block the Ring Road if NDMC refused to withdraw its decision.
According to the traders, there is no space to accommodate additional street vendors in the market and that it would only add to the chaos.
Meanwhile, the vendors feel that their rights should not be curtailed and they should be given equal opportunity as well.
When NDMC officials were contacted, they said that they had followed the existing rules regarding the allotment of space to street vendors.
Recently, street vendors across the city have been facing a lot of hurdles. Many street vendors have been relocated in the recent draw conducted by NDMC.
