Addressing mediapersons during an ‘urgently’ called press meet, Irani clarified that the MoU signed between Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and Goethe-Institut, Max Mueller Bhawan, was not discussed with the HRD ministry at any stage. The minister further said that there were several provisions in the MoU that violate the National Policy on Education’s (NPE) three language formula.
The union education minister, while reacting to a report ‘HRD replaces German with Sanskrit as language option’ published in Millennium Post, said that HRD ministry is not against the teaching of German language, but it should be in conformity with our domestic policies, regulations. The KVS Board, which is headed by HRD minister, has kept the option open for students of class 6 to 8 to study German as an additional subject or hobby, if they desire, but not as a third language. The move to change third language in the mid-session is set to affect over 70,000 students across the 500 KVs.
