Sanjay Dutt gets a clean chit

In a big respite for the Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, the Akhilesh Yadav govt has decided to withdraw three criminal cases against the actor, which were lodged by the Mayawati govt during the 2009 LS elections.

Sanjay was booked for allegedly making objectionable remarks of jaadu ki jhappi during a campaigning for the SP in Barabanki, Mau and Pratapgarh districts. He was then general secretary of the SP.

According to sources, the state govt has decided to withdraw the cases after taking legal opinion from the law department and others concerning departments. The govt will now move the application in the concerned courts as well as in the Allahabad HC seeking court's permission for quashing the FIRs. In April 2009, three FIRs were lodged against Sanjay Dutt under different sections of IPC and the Representation of People Act. The police investigated the case and filed charge sheets. Last year, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court stayed the proceedings in the cases filed.

The SP had decided to field Sanjay from Lucknow in the LS elections. However, the SC did not give him permission to contest elections since he had been convicted in a case.

While addressing a public meeting in Pratapgarh, the actor allegedly made objectionable remarks against the then CM Mayawati and the police lodged an FIR. In the same month, at a public rally in Mau, Dutt reportedly made an inflammatory speech and referred to a particular religion. He also allegedly claimed that he was 'victimised' because his mother was a Muslim. Again a case was lodged. The third case was registered for a speech made on 19 April at Dariyabad.
