Sanitation workers may go on strike from Jan 27

Employee unions of  the three BJP-ruled  Municipal Corporations will go on strike on January 27 as their demands for salary on time, medicals facilities, promotion etc are yet to be fulfilled.

Over 1.25 lakh employees, who are yet to get their three months’ salaries and other dues, have given an ultimatum of two weeks following which halting of services are likely to take place.

The cash-strapped agencies, however, have said that without getting special package, it is not possible to ensure payment of the employees.

If materialised, the strike will affect the city heavily as the MCDs perform majority of the key functions from ensuring cleanliness to maintaining birth and death records and running hospitals.

“Despite carrying on a protest for 40-days, the government did not bother to hear our problem.  Most of the workers are not getting their salaries and proper remuneration.

“Delay in promotion has been a perennial problem for all the workers involved with MCD. Besides, not getting proper facility, the workers also not provided with the tools for carrying out the daily business,” said Sanjay Gehlot, President  of Swatantra Majdoor Vikas Sanyukta Morcha SMVSM.

“Most of the workers have been working without uniforms and even using their own brooms and other cleaning tools to clean the Capital and cannot work without pay as they have to manage their family,” added Gehlot.
