Sanitation workers dodge attendance

The employees in local civic bodies have learnt how to dodge bio-metric attendance system and the smart ones are mainly from sanitation department. According to councillors, the sanitation workers, in collusion with sanitary inspectors, are just marking the attendance but not doing actual work.

‘The situation of sanitation is worsening by the day as sanitation workers come to mark their attendance on biometric machines but never perform their duties,’ said Virender Kasana, Leader of Opposition in South Delhi Municipal (SDMC) on Thursday.

The new system of biometric attendance was introduced to contain fake employees, make the employees punctual and make the system more efficient.

‘We should involve local associations like RWAs, market associations and local councillor for physical verification of their work. The report of these associations must be compared with attendance data to get ground reality,’ said Kasana. The councillors cutting across party line expressed their grievances regarding poor condition of sanitation and suggested measures to improve in the meeting of the house. According to the data with SDMC the posts of around 1881 sanitation workers, 119 sanitation guides, 168 assistant sanitation inspectors, 18 sanitation inspectors, and 15 grade C and B officers are vacant. ‘We have started the process of recuriting sanitation workers and will complete it by January,’ replied Manish Gupta, municipal commissioner, of SDMC.
