Sangh in no hurry on BJP’s PM candidate

With the clamour within the BJP growing louder by the day to make Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi the party’s prime ministerial candidate, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Thursday struck a note of caution. The Sangh has advocated that in the run up to the general elections next year, the focus of the party should not be on individual leaders.

Sources say that the RSS was of the view that by focussing on an individual leader, the electoral issues that need to be raised get eclipsed. This view was expressed at a coordination meeting of the Sangh and the BJP leadership in the national capital on Thursday.
BJP president Rajnath Singh, coming out of the meeting, said, ‘There was no discussion on this topic, whenever any decision on the issue has to be taken, the BJP Parliamentary Board will discuss it.’

The day also saw Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh saying that it was too early for BJP to take a call on its prime ministerial candidate and a decision in this regard will be taken at an appropriate time. Singh said there were many leaders in the party including BJP veteran L K Advani, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Modi among others who could be considered for the post.
