As part of its tradition of honoring leaders in art, culture and sports, Delhi government will this year honor two of India’s most respected flag bearers in the field of music and visual arts – Padma Bhushan Shri Abdul Rashid Khan and Padma Shri Anjolie Ela Menon.
The two veteran artists will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, 2013 on 11 August by Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit at a ceremony presented by the Department of Art, Culture and Languages and organised by the Sahitya Kala Parishad.
A treasure of talent and experience, Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan has lived 106 years immersed in the river of Indian musical tradition.
A Hindustani classical music vocalist, Ustad Khan saheb has a rich repertoire including Khayal, Dhrupad, Dhamar and Thumri music. He has been honored with India’s third highest civilian award Padma Bhushan for his achievements and contributions.
Anjolie Ela Menon has also been a trend setter. She is among India’s leading contemporary artists and has created a name for herself in India and internationally. Recognised as one of the foremost Indian artists of her generation, she has been honored with the Padma Shri by the Indian government.
The ceremony to be held at Kamani Auditorium on the evening of 11 August will be enriched by a performance from the Ustad himself who give a vocal recital while an exhibition of the paintings of Menon will also form a part of the event.
‘Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan saheb and Anjolie Ela Menon are guiding lights for the young artists of today. They have come to symbolise their art forms in some ways. You cannot talk about Hindustani classical music tradition without naming Ustad Rashid; similarly the mention of Indian contemporary art is incomplete without Menon. Delhi government is privileged to confer Lifetime Achievement Award on them.
The government of Delhi instituted the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ in 2004 to be conferred upon eminent personalities for their outstanding contributions in the fields of music, dance, theatre, visual arts, literature and sports.
A number of renowned personalities in these fields have been honored so far including Carnatic music doyen Smt M S Subbulakshmi, Theatre veterans Shri Ebrahim Alkazi and Shri Habib Tanvir, artist Smt Zohra Sehgal, Sarod maestro Shri Amjad Ali Khan, eminent writer Shri Ruskin Bond, chess master Shri Viswanathan Anand, among others.
‘Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan and Anjolie Ela Menon are artists whose contributions to their respective fields have left an indelible mark on Indian cultural history. They are an inspiration to artists of all kinds. An evening to honor them would have been incomplete without showcasing their work. We will therefore also have a performance by Ustad saheb himself and an exhibit of some of Menon’s art works,’ says S. S. Yadav, Secretary of the Art Culture and Language.
