Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) on Monday said that its sales rose 15.77 per cent during August to 10.86 lakh tonnes over the same month last year.
'Notwithstanding the slowdown in the steel market, SAIL registered a 16 per cent growth in sales during the month of 13 August by selling 10.86 lakh tonnes of steel products as compared to 9.38 lakh tonnes in corresponding period last year (CPLY),' the steel major said in a statement.
It also said, 'concerted efforts to harness the rising dollar materialised in a significant growth in exports to a level of 31,000 tonnes, a CPLY growth of 36 per cent.'
The rise in sales was mainly on account of increase in flat product sales, which went up by 26 per cent, it said.'The long products saw a growth of 3 per cent, retail sales at 53,800 tonnes in the month were up by 62 per cent on a month-to-month basis,' the PSU added.
Flat products like plates, hot rolled coils (HR-coils), cold rolled coils (CR-coils) are semi-finished products of steel and are used by automotive, earth-moving, railways, consumer goods industries etc. On the other hand, long products like TMT bars etc are used mainly in construction sector.
For the five month period of April-August'13, the company's cumulative steel sales stood at 47.8 lakh tonnes, a growth of 7 per
cent over CPLY.
