Saibaba attacked while waiting for joining letter

There was an attempt to attack Delhi University (DU) teacher G N Saibaba on Monday when he was waiting inside the staff room of Ram Lal Anand

College (RLA) to receive his joining letter after the revocation of his temporary suspension.

Since he has come out on bail in a case allegedly related to his involvement in Maoist activities, this was the third attack on him. “He wasn’t harmed as staff members interfered and saved him from the attackers,” said Aman, a third year student of Venkateswara College.

According to Aman, he was present outside the staff room when a group of 15-20 people including Bharat Kumar, state secretary of Akhil Bhjaratiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Chhatrasal Yadav, Joint Secretary of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) forcefully entered inside the staff room and tried to hit Saibaba.

“They were raising slogans against me and were not letting me enter the college. But the timely intervention by the staff members saved me,” said Saibaba.

Saibaba was arrested by the Maharashtra Police for alleged Maoist links in 2014. After the arrest,
he was suspended from college. He suffers 90 per cent disability.

Last week, RLA College’s governing body constituted a one-member committee to revoke his suspension and reinstate him.

A joint delegation of Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) and staff association of RLA College had appealed to the governing body members to revoke the suspension.
