Sahib’s son begins innings with a six

BJP’s West Delhi candidate Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma won his debut Lok Sabha elections with a record margin of over two lakh votes followed by Jarnail Singh of AAP with outgoing MP Mahabal Mishra coming to distant third.

Out of 13,48,744 votes cast, son of former Delhi chief minister late Sahib Singh Verma, Parvesh Verma got 6,51,395 defeating his closest rival Jarnail Singh who got 3,82,809 by a whopping margin of 2,68,586. Congress candidate Mahabal Mishra who won the 2009 Lok Sabha polls by over one lakh votes came third with just 1,93,266 votes.

The outgoing MP, swept away by the Modi wave, couldn’t even get one sixth of the total votes cast to recover his security deposit. The None Of The Above (NOTA) option too got 7,932 votes from the West Delhi constituency.

Parvesh led from all the 10 Assembly segments of West Delhi constituency. Even in Sikh-dominated segment of Tilak Nagar, which was considered the main vote bank for Jarnail Singh, the difference of votes was around ten thousands in favour of Parvesh.

He also accepted the fact that it was the ‘Modi magic’ and the legacy of his late father that sailed him through in the polls.

‘I would like to congratulate all those who supported me in the election. It was Modi’s magic and the supporters of my father who helped me win the polls’, said Parvesh while signing off with BJP’s infamous slogan ‘acchhe din aane wale hain (good days are about to come).’

Sensing his defeat from probably the exit polls Congress’ Mahabal Mishra didn’t even come to the counting centre. Though, his son came but he left after a while. On the other hand, AAP’s Jarnail Singh came for a short while but left even before the counting started.
