In respect to violation of Indian Medical Council Regulation 2012, Delhi Medical Council (DMC) has suspended a doctor at Safdarjung hospital for three months for travelling abroad and enjoying hospitality from a pharmaceutical company.
Orthopaedic surgeon Naval Bhatia, at the Sports Injury Centre of Safdarjung hospital, attended a conference at Hong Kong sponsored by Stryker India Company. According to the rule, one cannot claim hospitality or travel facilities under section 6.8.1 (b) of Indian Medical Council Regulation 2012.
A medical practitioner should not accept any travel facility inside or outside the country for attending conference, seminars, workshops and CME (continuing medical education) programmes as a delegate. Indian Medical Council (IMC) Regulations, 2012, also states that a medical practitioner should not accept hospitality like hotel accommodation.
Girish Tyagi, secretary, DMC, said that Bhatia had taken prior permission from DGHS before visiting Hong Kong but could not produce documents to substantiate his claim. Naval Bhatia could not be contacted for comments.
