Five days after a six-year-old student of South Delhi’s Ryan International School was found dead in a water tank on the campus, Delhi Police have arrested the principal and four other staff of the school. However, all five of them were granted bail by a local court in few hours after their arrest.
Besides principal Sandhya Sabu (50), those arrested included class teacher Minakshi Kapoor (38) and drinking water system operator Yogesh Kholiya (23).
Maintenance in-charge of the tank Puran Singh Bisht (65) and gardener Ram Narayan (44) were also arrested. All five were arrested under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of IPC.
“During the probe, negligence of the principal along with other four school staff was confirmed. We had promised the aggrieved family a fair probe and a speedy justice, which we have provided them,” RS Krishnia, Joint Commissioner of Police (South-Eastern range) said.
The five people have been charged under Section 304A (death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. It is a bailable offence, the police said.
On Saturday, Devyansh Kakrora, a class I student, was found dead in the reservoir under the amphitheatre of the school. School authorities had told the police that the boy was last seen before the seventh period, which was around 12.20 pm.
They later found him floating in the reservoir and rushed him to a private hospital where he was declared brought dead.
It was the hospital authorities and not those of school who had informed the police about the incident. After preliminary investigation, the police had registered a case of negligence causing death at the Vasant Kunj North police station.
Later in the day, the Delhi government had also ordered a magisterial probe. The initial post-mortem report of Devyansh suggested he died of drowning and no external injuries were found, police said.
The police had questioned the school authorities, including the principal, for five days.
A source said, police will file the charge-sheet within 15 days.
Meanwhile deputy CM Manish Sisodia met the family in person on Thursday evening and assured them of full support in their pursuit for justice.
