RTI activist tortured, burnt with cigarette butts by unidentified assailants

Even as the reports of the murder of an RTI activist in Mumbai on Wednesday were fresh in the minds of the people, a similar case was reported from Dankaur area of Gautam Budh Nagar on Thursday.

A 29-year-old RTI activist was found in a shocking condition on 17 December, five days after he was abducted. Anoop Singh has been tortured brutally with cigarette butts.

On 13 December, Anoop Singh, vice-president of BJP’s Dankaur unit was abducted by unidentified men while he was on his way back home.

Talking to Millennium Post, his uncle Bachu Singh said, ‘Anoop was returning home from Sikka village early morning when an SUV bumped into his motorbike. Before he could react, four-five miscreants blindfolded him and picked him up. They beat him with rods and burnt his private parts with cigarettes and hot iron rods.’

For five days there was no information on Singh’s whereabouts. On Wednesday, his family received a call from the Jehangirpur police station informing them that Anoop has been found lying naked with grievous injury marks on the road.

Bachu Singh said that his nephew had raised his voice against the inferior quality work in the area and had filed an RTI with the Yamuna Expressway Authority asking for the details of the contractors.

A case has been registered at the Dankaur station and Singh’s family is hopeful that the police would crack the case soon and apprehend the culprits.

SO Shailender Pratap Singh, Dankaur police station, said that the investigation is going on but they are finding it difficult as the culprits are unknown to Anoop, also he did not see their faces. Pratap Singh said, ‘Anoop has not named anybody in the case and has cleared that he did not have a dispute with anyone before. We are investigating the matter and soon we will be able to nab the culprits.’
