Rs 5 lakh compensation given to slain worker’s family by South MCD

The mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) Khushi Ram Chunar on Thursday announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 5 lakh to the family of a sanitary worker who had committed suicide last week.

The civic body has also been directed to give a permanent job to his son. ‘His son must be appointed for his job at the earliest,’said Satish Upadhayay, chairman of standing committee in SDMC. He also requested the civic officers and councillors to offer financial assistance to deceased’s family.

‘All the Congress councillors will donate one meeting fee of Rs 350 to the family. I have suggested all the 104 councillors to follow the call,’ said Fardhar Suri, leader of opposition in SDMC. The family would get a compensation of Rs 3.5 lakhs with councillors’ contribution. According to sources, the corporation has launched a scheme to regularise Safai Karamcharis of its jurisdiction for which the officers had demanded Rs 60,000 as bribe from the victim. Unable to pay the bribe, he committed suicide by setting himself on fire. He accused his two senior officers for extorting money. A case of abatement of suicide has been registered against the accused.
