Rs 2500 crore rail coach factory for Rae Bareli

Inaugurating Rs 2500 crore rail coach factory in her constituency Rae Bareli, Congress party president Sonia Gandhi said that this factory would usher in development in the whole region in particular and in Uttar Pradesh in general.

‘Those farmers whose lands have been acquired to set up this factory would get job with railways,’ Mrs Gandhi declared after inaugurating the RCF in Rae Bareli on Wednesday.

More than 1,400 farmers will be offered jobs in railways. Sonia Gandhi gave appointment letters to 20 farmers in the inauguration.

The inauguration came less than two week after Congress got the Railway Ministry from its estranged ally Trinamool Congress.

Though there was confusion over giving jobs to farmers as some sections of Cong leaders have opposed this policy saying it was suggested by Mamata Banerjee when she was Railway Minister.

Railway Minister Pawan Bansal said that there were precedents to jobs being given in exchange for acquired land for the ministry’s projects. He, though, declined to commit to making this a provision in the new Land Acquisition Bill, saying the offer has to be ‘on a case to case basis’. He also said that a standing committee of Parliament is looking into the bill and it will have to be the members’ decision on whether to provide jobs for land or not.

The Rae Bareli project is expected to create an additional 3,000 jobs in the support sector for the coach factory. It is expected to rolling out coaches from 2013.

The rail coach factory was earlier expected to be inaugurated in July last, but the programme was postponed due to delay on the part of the administration in providing  jobs to the farmers in lieu of their lands. The coach factory is equipped to manufacture lightweight stainless steel coaches. It is expected to cater to Railways’ increasing demand for coaches by annually rolling out about 1,000 units.
