Did you always want to be an actor?
Yes, I always aspired to be an actor. Unlike many others in the industry I come from a rural background with an inherent talent and love for creativity. The creativity which I explored through acting. As I grew up my fondness for theatre grew. Later I thought the best avenue was Bollywood, so I made the move.
Do you feel Bhiku Matre has somewhere overshadowed the real Manoj Bajpai?
Every role that I have done has overshadowed Manoj Bajpai. The fact which I take it as a compliment. All the roles I have chosen so far, be it Bhiku Matre of Satya, Sardar Khan of Gangs Of Wasseypur or Raghavan Ghatge of Aks, are all my identities. I chose them hence they are me.
Any dream role still left to be explored?
There are no dream roles for me. All the roles or characters I choose I do them with complete honesty and sincerity. Dream is nothing but a superficial reality. I aspire to make all my roles count as dream roles for people to remember me for.
You have constantly redefined yourself. Would you call yourself as a method actor?
Not really, rather I would call myself an actor who's method keeps changing constantly. If you look at my career graph you would notice dynamism. I never stick to a type. I have always endeavoured to experiment and evolve as an actor keeping the script and role in mind.
How do you deal with rejection?
All my life I have been rejected at some instance or the other. Rejection is the most crude but real part of life. It’s the attitude which matters and how you face it. I never cared about rejection much and has always kept it in my pocket and moved on.
Films like Gangs of Wasseypur and Special 26 has limited appeal. But now even big production houses are opting for such films. What is your take on it?
A film can never be judged on its appeal. In fact there is a lot to a film in terms of direction, cast, script etc. How a subject is treated makes the real difference. I believe that till such films become successful and commercially hit, they would continue to have a market of takers and givers.
Have you ever thought of directing movies?
Not till date. I enjoy being an actor and have my set goals for it. Direction requires an eye which I have not developed as yet.
Would you want to belong to the 100 crore club?
I don’t understand the hoopla around Rs 100 crore club. Rs 100 crore is nothing for our industry. There are films which only have production cost of that much, do you know the pre and post production add upto to much more than a 100 crores? There is money overflowing and compartmentalising the 100 crore is not fair.
