Row over insurance FDI bill: RSS trade union wing threatens strike

Its leader Vrijesh Upadhyay said the government was ‘befooling’ the people in the name of FDI. ‘If it (insurance bill) is being tabled in Parliament tomorrow, all unions will go on strike,’ he said.

He said BMS was opposed to FDI completely and not in insurance sector alone. He said there was ‘little’ FDI in India and most of the money shown as FDI was Indian which was being routed here from abroad.

Upadhyay said ‘the government should first come out with a white paper about whatever investment has come. It should be known to the people. My allegation is whatever investment has come is Indian’.

Meanwhile, despite cracks within the UPA, the Congress has decided to hold its ground on not supporting the insurance bill in the present form. The standoff between the government and the principal opposition party continued on Tuesday. The government, on the other hand, has decided to take the opposition head on if they do not ‘get counseled’.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the party does not have ‘double standards’ on the insurance bill. ‘I think the Congress does not have double standards on the insurance bill,’ he told reporters in parliament complex, when it was pointed out that their government had initiated the bill, which was now being opposed by his party. Gandhi’s crisp reply reflected the party’s stand on the matter.

Later in the day, senior leader Anand Sharma, said, ‘All opposition parties were together yesterday (Monday) when the government called for an informal meeting. We (Congress) are not being obstructionist and opposing (the bill) just for the sake of it.’

‘In a democracy the government must listen to opposition, the combined opposition. The best way for the government is to discuss it,’ he added.
