Rooney is England’s future skipper: Hodgson

Roy Hodgson has revealed that he sees Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney as England’s future captain.

With regular skipper Steven Gerrard suspended and vice-captain Frank Lampard injured for Friday’s World Cup qualifier against San Marino, England manager Hodgson gave Rooney the armband and he responded with two goals in a 5-0 victory.

Gerrard will return to lead the team in Tuesday’s qualifier against Poland in Warsaw.

But Rooney’s mature display in his first competitive international as England captain convinced Hodgson that he could do the job on a permanent basis in the future.

‘Yes,’ said Hodgson, when asked if Rooney was a future England captain. ‘He was my vice-captain at the Euros from the moment he could start playing again.

‘He does take playing for England seriously. I know being captain is something he’s very proud of.’

Meanwhile, England’s Theo Walcott will miss Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier in Poland with a chest injury, the FA confirmed.

ZIDANE TO TAKE FIRST STEPS FOR COACH ROLE

Former France captain Zinedine Zidane will take his first steps towards becoming a fully-fledged football coach when he sits the preliminary coaching exams this year.

In an interview with L’Equipe newspaper on Sunday, Zidane said: ‘I’ll pass my coaching diplomas, we’ll see later on for the professional coaching licence. You have to start with something and I’ll start this year.’

Zidane mooted over the idea of coaching France. ‘One day, why not coach the french team? I’ve got lots of other things to do beforehand so lets see.’

‘I SAW RONALDINO SCORE SIMILAR GOAL’

Lionel Messi has revealed he drew inspiration from former Barcelona teammate Ronaldinho during his two-goal performance in Argentina’s 3-0 World  Cup qualifying victory over Uruguay.

Messi netted his second goal by firing a free-kick under the Uruguay wall, emulating Ronaldinho and Italy legend Andrea Pirlo.

‘I saw that Ronaldinho and Pirlo both scored similar goals,’ Messi said. ‘The goalkeeper knew that I like to shoot over the top and was flat-footed. I anticipated  he was going to jump and decided to go underneath.’
