A day after the audacious Rs 8 crore Rolex heist at Janpath, Delhi Police is all set to obtain CCTV footages from adjacent premises and question ‘insiders’.
On the intervening night between Tuesday and Wednesday, around 90 Rolex watches, worth Rs 8 crore, were stolen from the Cooke and Kelvey showroom at the Scindia House building in Janpath. All the stolen goods were insured, police said.
‘The lock of the showroom wasn’t broken and the person in charge told the police that the thief must have been a child, who could be shoved inside through the little gap that existed between the shutter and the floor, said a senior police official. He further added that the jewellery kept in display at the showroom was spared by the thief, who took away only Rolex watches.
This showroom has been there for decades and at any point of time they have watches worth crores on display. ‘This makes it even more difficult to understand why they have failed to install CCTV cameras,’ said the senior police official.
‘We have taken fingerprints from the showroom, but the forensic experts have yet not given any clue to establish the involvement of a child,’ said SBS Tyagi, Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi). He further said, the thief even found where the keys to the showcase were kept and did not have to break anything.
The police are suspecting an insider’s role in the incident and soon the employees will be interrogated, said SBS Tyagi.
