Roadblock created by airport line repair removed

The two-way National Highway 8 [NH 8], from IGI Airport towards Karol Bagh, which was blocked on one side due to repair work of the Airport Metro line, will reopen on 5 October for commuting. The route going towards the airport, however, will remained blocked.

Structural defects on the airport line had led to  stopping of movement since 8 July this year.

Faults were identified on the interface between girders and pillars at several places along the Airport Metro line and they  are now being repaired. Of the 2,100 bearings in the elevated section of the corridor, 500 needed corrections in the 22.7 km line.

The commuters, meanwhile, are having a difficult time commuting via this important route, as it has been one-way since 20 September on the upper Ring Road.  ‘It is difficult to commute every day from Dhaula Kuan to Karol Bagh, as one part of the road going towards the Airport is closed. I have to take a longer route to commute to office everyday,’ said Sunil Malhotra, a commuter. As the wait for the Airport Metro line becomes longer, Amit Kumar Singh, a constructor on the site, said, ‘The public inconvenience is not the only issue which is cropping up. They have to wait till it is fully ready to restart. But the safety of the public is more important for us.’

The Airport Metro line will reopen for the public only after being re-certified by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety.
