His sons said two policemen were present at the spot, but they did not come forward to help.
The incident took place around late Sunday night when Mohammad Shahnawaz, along with his sons, was returning to his home in Shankar Gali on his motorcycle. The incident triggered a massive protest in the area.
Around 400 residents staged a protest against the Delhi Police and the Aam Aadmi Party government. The protest, which started late Sunday night, continued till Monday afternoon. The protesters blocked roads in central Delhi, resulting in jams. The police have deployed additional police force to maintain law and order in the area.
The Delhi Police have called it as a case of a road rage. The police are investigating the case from all angles, including enmity. One of the five accused was arrested on Monday. The police have launched a manhunt to nab the other accused, who are said to be in property business and part of a builder’s lobby operating in the area.
The police said Shahnawaz ran an electric shop in the area. When he reached Mata Sundari area, his motorbike had a head-on collision with the car. The occupants of the car, including two women seated, asked Shahnawaz to give way, but refused. This led to a verbal altercation, which turned violent.
“Three men got out of the car and thrashed Shahnawaz, while their other two accomplices, riding a motorbike, joined them and started beating the victim. When Shahnawaz’s children intervened, they were also thrashed. All five accused fled, leaving Shahnawaz in a pool of blood. After some time Shahnawaz’s brother reached the spot and rushed him to the LNJP Hospital where he was declared brought dead,” a senior police official said.
“We are trying to identify policemen deployed in the Turkman gate area during night shift. Also, we will match their presence with the help of mobile surveillance. If any policeman is found guilty, action will be taken against him,” said Parmaditya, DCP (central).
Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi said he was personally “looking into the matter”.
“Shahnawaz’s family was returning from the house of my son-in-law who recently died. They had gone to visit my daughter. As Shahnawaz uses motorbike to commute, he took turns to first drop his wife and daughter at his house. In the second trip, he was returning with his sons,” said Noor Jahan,
Shahnawaz’s mother.
