Riot victims asked to take compensation, forgo property

The survivors who wanted to stage protest in the state capital but denied permission said that the district administration was pressurizing them to sign an affidavit, which states they will have to leave relief camps and not return to our villages after availing financial assistance.

Rihai Manch had brought the survivors to Lucknow for a public hearing for which the permission was denied forcing the organizers to organize the protest march.

Magsaysay awardee Sandeep Pandey, who is participating in the protest, criticized the UP government for its failure to stop communal elements from holding panchayats but denying permission to survivors to protest peacefully.

One of the agitators Mohammad Salim said: ‘ The affidavit states that we cannot make any further claims. As we are not allowed to go back to our villages after getting the compensation, it implies we will have to forgo claims over our properties that will be either taken over by those who forced us to flee or be confiscated by the government.’
