Riot-ravaged Muzaffarnagar tense, but under control

Barring minor incidents in several parts, no major incident was reported and majority of people preferred to stay at home. Meanwhile, Eid-ul-zoha was celebrated amid tight security in and around the district.

On Sunday, tension prevailed when beheaded bodies of three persons were discovered in Bahadurpur village, about five kilometres away from the city area. The district in west Uttar Pradesh, scarred by a slew of violent communal conflagrations between Hindus and Muslims, was drowned in fear of another riot erupting in the wake of these findings, as one community blamed another for the brutal murders. Angry locals blocked highway and other arterial roads in protest and halted traffic for nearly six hours.

Following Sunday’s incident, the police teams were set up to arrest the accused involved in the beheading of the tree men. ‘Five teams, including a crime branch team, have been constituted to look into the Bahadurpur killing case in which three labourers were killed by unidentified miscreants,’ said a senior police official.

Inspector general of police (IGP), Alok Sharma, told media persons that a case has been registered against unidentified miscreants and four police teams and a crime branch team have been set up to nab the killers. Three labourers, Surender (25), Kunwerpal (27) and Sunder (21), were killed by unidentified persons on Saturday night. Their bodies were discovered after they did not return home from the factory in Bahadurpur village.

The district authorities have awarded a compensation of Rs 1,50,000 each to the families of the victims. Meanwhile, four others, who were reported to be missing since Saturday night, returned to their homes on Monday and said they had stayed back in the factory.
