Retd Merchant Navy officer sexually assaults maid, held

A retired Merchant Navy officer has been arrested on Tuesday evening for allegedly raping a 27-year-old domestic help at his residence in the posh colony of Vasant Kunj (North) in South Delhi.

The retired officer has been identified as Naveen Tiwari (60) who is residing in a duplex in Vasant Kunj area with his wife and daughter. The maid, who hails from Bihar, had recently joined work on June 26 after Tiwari’s driver referred her.

According to the domestic help, she resides on the second floor in the servant’s quarter of Tiwari’s residence.  On Monday late evening, when she was going upstairs, Tiwari followed her and allegedly sexually assaulted her. When she opposed to the act, she was allegedly threatened of dire consequences.

In her statement she had mentioned that she didn’t raise her voice during the late hours of Monday but on Tuesday morning she left the house without informing anyone and somehow managed to reach Vasant Kunj (North) police station.

She narrated the incident to the police and after the medical examination, a case under the section of rape was registered on Tuesday afternoon. On late Tuesday evening, Tiwari was arrested from his residence based on the allegation framed on him and till late hours he was intensively quizzed at Vasant Kunj police station. On Wednesday morning he is likely to be produced in the local court to send him to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, Tiwari’s family is rubbishing the charges framed on him and are claiming that Tiwari is innocent. Post retirement, Tiwari was teaching maritime at an institute of applied research in Saket.
