Residents stage protest over illegal mobile towers in Ggn

Wary of health hazards, hundreds of DLF City residents staged a protest against the setting up of ‘illegal’ mobile towers along the Delhi-Gurgaon Road, citing heath hazards. The administration has allowed mobile companies to set up more towers to improve mobile signals in the area.

“There is no evidence that indicates the rays emanating from mobile towers are harmful. They are like electricity towers,” said a senior officer of a mobile company.

Residents spotted a digging work in the area and informed the police and forest department officials about it. They rushed to the spot and found that the contractor did not have the requisite permission to carry out the activity. The work was then stopped with immediate effect.

“A pit has already been dug to erect another tower in the area. The towers are generally erected at night so that there is nobody to protest. Unfortunately, the authorities stand as mute spectators and we suffer,” said GB Singh, a resident.

When residents approached the police, they were told that work on the tower started after getting the Haryana Urban?Development Authority’s (HUDA) permission.

“We have been protesting against the tower installation, but the police did not listen to us. The private mobile firm staff came and dug a green belt and tried to complete the installation work in a hurry, but we spotted them,” said Dhruv Bansal, another resident.

“Officials of the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon and the forest department were reached the spot. The junior engineer denied permission for a mobile tower installation,” said Rama Rani Rathee, councillor of the area.
