There seems to be no end to the impasse over the resettlement of Kathputli colony. The residents have threatened to go on a strike if they are shifted to temporary camps in Anand Parbat.
‘We are not willing to relocate to temporary camps. This is our home. Why should we move to a temporary settlement far away from here?’ asked Dilip Bhat, president, Bhule Bisre Kalakar Association, a trust formed by slum dwellers in the area.
The main bone of contention between the DDA and the residents is the ambiguity over the number of flats to be build and who all it will be allotted to under the in-situ development project. While DDA officials say that 2,800 units will be built, residents claim that the requirement is for approximately 3,200 units.
The residents are also unaware of who all will be allotted the flats. ‘We don’t even know how many flats are going to be build and who all are going to get it’, said Bhat.
The RTI inquiry by the residents revealed that 2,700 units would be built. ‘We don’t trust the DDA officials. Why can’t they reveal the names of allottees if there is nothing wrong’, he added.
The DDA officials said that the flats would be allotted according to the survey undertaken by the DDA in 2010-11. However, there is still no clarity given by the DDA over who all will get it.
Ruling out any possibility of agitation the Kathputli colony residents, the spokesperson of the DDA said that the residents have offered to vacate the slums adding that those who are eligible for the flats will definitely get it.
‘We are in talks with the people of Kathputli colony. They have no problem in shifting to a temporary camp. We should move forward with the relocation very soon’, said the spokesperson.
