Residents heave sigh of relief after Section 144 is relaxed for an hour

Police also made necessary arrangements to ensure supply of essential goods like rice, pulses, vegetables, milk and also gas cylinders (with special permission). The prohibitory order, almost equivalent to a curfew in which no human movement was allowed in certain zones of the east Delhi district, was relaxed from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm. ‘This relaxation is like an experiment on our side, hope it will work out well today (Monday), and we are also planning to relax Section 144 from 1 pm to 4 pm tomorrow (Tuesday),’ said Sanjay Beniwal, Joint Commissioner of Police (east).

According to sources, police have short-listed around five ‘bad characters’ in the area, who could be the key men triggering the riots. A hunt to nab them was launched on Monday evening.

There were no fresh incidents of violence reported for the past 24 hours and 14 individuals, who had allegedly made hoax calls to the police, were detained. According to police records, 44 people have been arrested so far for rioting, after releasing a majority of the detained ‘miscreants’ who were later found to be juveniles. Rumours of the death of a 15-year-old boy, who earlier got shot during the riot on Saturday, had created chaos in one particular block.

However, that was soon pacified by the police, who later assured that the boy, named Arjun, was alive and he was admitted to a private hospital, though battling for his life. It also emerged that three out of the total five people who sustained bullet injuries during the riots were minors.

Senior police officials, however, refused to call it a curfew and insisted that Section 144 CrPC has a broad base of application and, in this case, it was being imposed in a higher degree and much intense level.
