The foundation stone of 1984 Sikh Genocide Memorial being built in Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib complex was unveiled on Wednesday.
Deputy Chief Minister of Pubjab Sukhbir Singh Badal, BJP national president Rajnath Singh, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and various other senior BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal leaders were also present at the event.
‘The memorial is a tribute to innocent people killed in anti-Sikh riots in Delhi in November 1984. It will strengthen the ties of communal harmony in Delhi,’ Parminder Pal Singh, media adviser of Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC), told Millennium Post. He further explained that the memorial would be built on an open in space in Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib complex on 400 yards space. After veiling ceremony, Sukhbir Badal said, ‘When we are not getting justice where would we go, we are left with no option but to raise a memorial for those who were killed in the genocide at least coming generations would know that innocents were mercilessly killed.’
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday declined to grant stay on the construction of the memorial as NDMC told the court that legal action will be taken soon if they go ahead with the project in violation of the statute.
The court, however, issued a notice to Delhi government, NDMC, DDA, DSGMC and its president Sardar Manjit Singh GK and sought their replies by 17 July on former DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna’s plea to stop the construction.
