Remembering Talat Mahmood

For film buffs, Talat Mahmood will always remain an idol. Back when Bollywood was still taking baby steps, Mahmood was mesmerising the audience with his acting and singing prowess.

So much so, some of his songs like Humse aaya na gaya (Dekh Kabira Roya), Jayen to jayen kahan (Taxi Driver), Aye mere dil kahin aur chal (Daag), Main dil hoon ek armaan bhara (Anhonee), Dil-E-Nadaan tujhe hua kya hai (Mirza Ghalib), Itna na mujhse tu pyar badha (Chhaya), Sham-E-Gham ki qassam  (Foothpath), Jalte hain jiske liye (Sujata), and others are still on the lips of music lovers.

On his 89th birthday, the Padma Bhushan awardee was commemorated by Delhiites at ICCR’s Azad Bhawan in Ek Sham Talat Mahmood ke Naam. Singer Bhupinder Pujji sang some of Mahmood’s popular songs and some rare ghazals.

Pujji sang some of Mahmood’s songs like Aye dil mujhe aisi jaga le chal, Main dil hoon ik armaan bharaa, Raat ne kya kya khwab dikhaye among others.

‘I have been a great fan of Talat saab. I remember the times I met him, we would talk about music for hours. He was just not an inspiration to an aspiring singer but he was also a great human being. He deserves to be remembered for his love for music and his entire struggle throughout his life,’ said Pujji.
