Real life dacoit gets reel

The lines ‘Beehad mai baghi rehte hai... dacait to Parliament mai hote hai’ from Paan Singh Tomar inspired Krishna Mishra to direct a movie. Titled Beehad, the film is based on the life of Nirbhay Singh Gujjar, the famous dacoit from the ravines of Chambal.

The cast includes Deepika Singh and Maan Singh (who is a dacoit in real life) in the lead roles.

‘The film has real-life daku Maan Singh playing his own character. Deepika plays Phoolan Devi, who was given shelter by Daku Maan Singh,’ said Mishra.

‘I wanted a very real character who could play the role of Daku Maan Singh. when I approached [Singh], he readily agreed. I couldn’t have asked for anything more real,’ Mishra added.

Deepika, a trained theatre artiste from the National School of Drama, confessed that she was highly inspired by Seema Biswas, who had earlier essayed a similar role in Bandit Queen.

‘The shots were challenging in terms of diction, abuses and living representation. I learned it in the workshop,’ Deepika pointed out.

Singh seemed his real dabbang self as he addressed the media. ‘Being a dacoit in real has trained me enough to portray it on the silver screen,’ he said.

‘Krishna and my association dates long back, so he didn’t face much trouble to convince me,’ Singh added.

Made on a budget of Rs 5 crores, Beehad is slated to hit the theaters in September.
