Rawat seeks Rs 9,222 crore from centre to clean Ganga at source

Noting that contamination of the Ganga and its tributaries needs to be contained at the points of their origin in Uttarakhand to cut down its pollution levels downstream, CM Harish Rawat on Monday sought funds to the tune of Rs 9,222 crore from the centre to rejuvenate the river in the hill state.

‘Uttarakhand is the origin state for river Ganga and most of its major tributaries, like Yamuna, Alaknanda, Mandakini, Ramganga and Sharda also originate in Uttarakhand.

‘We need to contain the contamination of the river in the origin itself and try to take preventive measures. Only then the pollution level downstream can be controlled and brought down,’ Rawat said, according to press statement here. Rawat was addressing a meeting of member states of the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) in New Delhi on Monday.

Expressing the state’s concern over the diverse views taken about the minimum ecological flow into various river systems of U’khand, he underlined the need for a group of experts to interact with the stakeholders and arrive at a consensus on the issue to help the state abide by the parameters set.
