Rapist on run as Delhi girl battles for her life

The national capital on Friday woke up to yet another shocking and disgraceful crime against women – this time against a five-year-old girl child, who is battling for her life at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. She was shifted to the premier hospital as law and order situation erupted at the Swami Dayanand in GTB enclave of trans-Yamuna area, where she was being initially treated.

A missing report was filed on Monday at Gandhi Nagar police station when the child was not found by her parents in their house. She was recovered on Wednesday by her parents and some neighbours, who found her locked in a room on the ground floor of the same building where they were staying. The resident, identified as Manoj (25), who took the ground-floor house on rent 10 days ago, locked room, and is on the run.

This led to the activists of the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Admi Party lead a protest at the hospital against the gruesome crime and ‘shoddy’ investigation by the police. They also demanded that the girl be shifted to a better hospital. Situation went out of control when the activists heckled Delhi Health Minister AK Walia and local member of parliament Sandeep Dikshit, son of the Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit. Walia was roughed by the belligerent activists present at the site.

While trying to push back the agitators, the local Assistant Commissioner of Police BS Ahlawat slapped a 17-year-old woman protestor drawing immediate ire. Ahlawat has since been suspended. The parents also alleged that the police tried to pay Rs 2,000 as bribe to hush-up the case. ‘Our purpose behind the protest was to ensure better medical care for victimi by shifting her to a better hospital like AIIMS or Safdarjung hospital,’ AAP leader Manish Sisodhiya said.

Prabhakar, Deputy Commissioner of Police said, ‘As per the allegations made by victim’s father, we have suspended the SHO and the Investigating officer of the case till pending enquiry.’ He added that Vigilance Branch is enquiring the matter. The elusive suspect in the case of rape of a five-year-old girl here was also allegedly involved in a trespass case, police said on Friday.

Manoj Kumar, who is in his mid-twenties, is involved in a case of trespassing in Gandhi Nagar. He allegedly had a dispute with his family and had been disowned by them, sources said. However, there was no official confirmation about it.

The family had filed the case in 2010 and he was arrested. The accused Manoj is a tailor and had taken the room on the ground floor of the building where the victim stayed. A senior police official said the owner of the three-storeyed building where the girl and the accused lived did not have any document to prove the identity of Manoj.

‘However we managed to identify him. We also identified his family. From them we got to know about his possible hideouts. Two teams are trying to find him,’ the official said.
