Day after a 22-year-old rape victim allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her house in Harsh Vihar area, Delhi Police registered a case of abetment to suicide against the accused Nain Singh. Father of the accused and his neighbour of Harsh Vihar locality were also accused of pressurising the victim’s family. Investigators said that they will be arresting Singh and his father soon.
According to the suicide note recovered from her possession, she was depressed as her family members were allegedly rebuking her. The victim was allegedly raped by a 24-year-old man and his friend in May this year after which the accused was arrested but was later released on bail.
Sources said that the woman had accused Nain Singh (24), who lived in her area, of raping her after giving her a drink laced with sedatives. Police had arrested Singh, who later got bail.
Meanwhile, DCP (North-east) Ajit Kumar Singla said that a case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and investigation is underway.
According to the police, the incident came to light when the girl was found hanging by a family member at around 6.30 am on Monday. Her family told the police that she had been depressed since the rape incident and did not appear for the Class XII examination.
Police further said that the woman had left a suicide note in which she accused the family of her alleged rapist for pressurising her family to arrive at a compromise outside the courts.
According to sources, the woman was aware that the family members of the accused had gone to her village and had pressurised her grandparents to settle the matter outside. The woman’s brother said she was depressed for a few days, but did not discuss her condition with anyone.
