Outrage over the gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student in the capital echoed loud in both houses of Parliament on Tuesday, with some of the members even going to the extent of demanding capital punishment for perpetrators of such crimes. A united opposition in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha asked for the suspension of Question Hour to discuss this issue. In the Lok Sabha, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain asked for suspension. Members took their seats only after Speaker Meira Kumar said, ‘This is a heinous act. I will allow you to raise the matter during Zero Hour.’
In the Rajya Sabha, BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu served notice for suspension of Question Hour to discuss the crime. At this point chairman Hamid Ansari allowed Maya Singh from the BJP to make a brief statement. Attacking home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde over the incident, Singh said the gangrape raises a question on whether it is the rule of law or rule of goondas in Delhi. Her party leader in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, stressed on the point that rapists should get death sentence, and demanded an explanation from Shinde on Delhi’s law and order situation.
BSP supremo Mayawati echoed similar feelings saying, ‘Nothing will happen by only arresting the perpetrators. Give them stringent punishment.’ Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde in Rajya Sabha said, ‘The gang-rape incident is a cause of worry. If there are any lapses, we will act against the police.’ TMC leader Derek O’ Brien said he was ‘nervous and scared as a father of a 17-year-old daughter’ as Delhi is becoming ‘rape capital’.
