In yet another incident of police callousness, the PCR van failed to reach the spot on time when a 25-year-old man made a brutal attempt to rape a student in Delhi.
Late on Monday evening, the victim, Sneha (name changed), was alone at her residence in Jal Vihar area of Lajpat Nagar, south-east Delhi. While she was talking over phone to a friend, an electrician, known to the family, entered the house.
Fortunately, Sneha’s phone remained on and her heard everything that took plcae. He then informed Sneha’s cousin, who lives nearby.
According to the police, the accused, Anil Kumar, forcibly entered the residence and tried to rape her. To avoid the possibility of being caught by someone, as the victim kept on screaming for help, he inserted an iron rod into her mouth.
‘I got a call from Sneha’s friend who told me that she was in trouble. I rushed to her residence along with my brother, but I found the doors locked from inside. I gathered a few neighbours for help and made a PCR call around 8.20 pm,’ said Sneha’s sister, Ritu (name changed).
Ritu added that the PCR van took around 45 minutes to reach the residence. ‘Even before the cops could reach, we had taken her to nearby Moolchand hospital. There were no women cops with the team. A policeman took the statements from me and my sister,’ Ritu said.
Ritu further alleged that despite Sneha’s critical condition, Moolchand hospital demanded Rs 10,000 in advance. Her brother then arranged for Rs 5,000 and her treatment started then. ‘Till 12.30 am, we had spent around Rs 15,000. Later, the hospital staff asked us to shift Sneha to AIIMS.’
Around 2 am, she was shifted to the emergency ward of AIIMS Trauma Centre. At 4 pm on Tuesday, she underwent a surgery in her throat. ‘Her condition is still critical. She will be kept under observation and the next 24 hours would be critical for her,’ a doctor at AIIMS said.
Kumar, the accused, was arrested from Noida. He stays in the same area along with his parents, two sisters and a brother.
Sneha’s mother works in a private bank as a cook and her elder brother works in a bank as data operator. Sneha’s father is not alive.
‘A case under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 376/511 (attempt to rape), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) and 452 (house-trespass alter preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Lajpat Nagar police station,’ the official said.
