Rape accused executive director jumps off terrace

A day after an FIR was registered against Khurshid Anwar (55), executive director of Institute for Social Democracy for raping a 24-year-old north east girl, on Wednesday committed suicide by jumping off his terrace in Vasant Kunj area of south Delhi.

On Tuesday evening, National Commission for Women (NCW) had lodged a complaint at Vasant Kunj (north) police station against Anwar on the basis of a testimony recorded by the victim in front of Madhu Kishwar, a social activist. Taking congnisance of the testimony, NCW member Nirmala Sawant had written letter to Delhi police commissioner BS Bassi. Sawant had also given a copy of the CD that contained the victim’s ordeal.

Anwar was booked under sections 376 (rape) and 328 (causing hurt by means of poison) of the Indian Penal Code on Tuesday night.

The victim was also a key protester in the agitations that followed the 16 December gang rape of a paramedical student.

Media had reported about the FIR being lodged in the case and several mediapersons had gathered near Anwar’s house at B block in Vasant Kunj.

Sources said that Anwar was miffed with the media for naming him as an accused merely on the basis of a video recorded by a girl. He was reportedly depressed with the development.
On Wednesday morning at around 11, Anwar jumped off the terrace and died on the spot.

Neighbours spotted the body lying in a pool of blood and reported the incident to the police. The police took Anwar to the AIIMS trauma centre where he was declared brought dead.

A police officer requesting anonymity said: ‘Anwar lived alone in his 2 BHK flat. A four-page handwritten note has been recovered from his bedroom. The note is being examined and so the content cannot be disclosed at the moment.’

A source, however, added: ‘The suicide note blames the TV channel for defaming him without even contacting him once. He has neither confessed nor denied rape allegations.’

Anwar was a PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University and was working with the NGO since 2003. Anwar had separated from his wife, who is a Spanish professor in JNU, and also a senior warden in Ganga Hostel. ‘Anwar’s ex-wife was informed about the suicide and she visited the mortuary to see the body at AIIMS,’ a police source said.

The victim in her testimony had claimed that Anwar had invited her for dinner and raped her after serving her drinks laced with sedatives.
